Chapter 29

The Gulfstream was reaching cruising altitude, gradually leveling off, the engines slowing a bit. So far, it had a smooth ride, but this did little to ease Elaine’s nerves. If either of the pilots caught her trying to open the container, no telling what would happen.

The cockpit door was still open. Elaine could see the back of both pilot’s heads—both were wearing headsets. Evangelos pulled off his headset, and Elaine heard the metallic snap of him unbuckling his seat belt.

He rose from his seat and stepped outside the cockpit door.

“You can take shower now,” he said, motioning to the aft section of the aircraft. “Also, galley is fully stocked if you want eat or drink—help yourself.”

“Thank you,” Elaine said, and he opened the door adjacent to the cockpit and entered the restroom.

She unfastened her seat belt and rose a little unsteadily due to the motion of the aircraft, then pulled her suitcase from behind the chair where the container sat and opened it up on the sofa. She hesitated, wondering whether it was worth the trouble to assemble the Sig one more time only to have to disassemble it again and re-hide it before landing at Santorini. But she decided she had no choice, not if she was going to take the risk of opening the container. She had no idea if the pilots were armed. Technically, she knew they had to follow the firearms laws of whatever country they were flying over, but then again, they worked for a criminal, so anything was possible.

While she waited for Evangelos to come out of the restroom, she busied herself and gathered together a fresh set of clothes to wear. After another minute she heard the restroom door open behind her, and, a few seconds later, the sound of him snapping his seatbelt back into place.

Squatting and using her body to block the view of the nearest camera, she opened the toilet kit and quickly assembled the pistol and filled the clip with ammunition, doing all this with her hands inside the suitcase. She’d done this so many times she could have completed the task blindfolded. If they could see her from the far camera, they would just assume she was rummaging around for shampoo and other toiletries.

When she finished, she tucked the assembled and loaded pistol into the corner of the suitcase, where she could reach it. Remaining in a squatting position, she pulled out Dmitry’s sat-phone, called Luna, and held the phone to her ear, making sure it wasn’t visible by the aft camera.

“I’m ready,” she whispered, as soon as Luna answered.

“Okay, baby-doll. All you do is type in these six numbers and then push the ‘pound’ key and it should open.”

“Just a sec,” Elaine whispered. She switched the phone between hands, unbuckled the seatbelt around the container, and slid it forward a bit—the arm of the chair was partially blocking the keypad.

She noticed the temperature still said +4 C.

Now she could hear Sophia and Evangelos talking to each other in Greek through the cockpit door, engaged in what sounded like casual conversation.
