December 10, 2019: Day 82

WE’VE FOUND FRESH polar bear tracks in the camp. We search the area thoroughly but can’t see any bears. They’ve probably moved on by now.

The Dranitsyn is making slow progress; the ice is causing difficulties. She’ll probably still reach us sometime tomorrow, but first she has to navigate the network of stations we’ve built on the ice some distance from our floe, without colliding with a single one. Some of these stations only send position data every few hours when they communicate with us via satellites. In the meantime, everything has drifted farther, and data isn’t much use if it’s several hours old. So I program a tool that corrects the station position data every minute using the drift data from the Polarstern. We also develop an approach route based on the stations’ bearings to the Polarstern, allowing the Dranitsyn to navigate safely through the network.

In the evening I begin to pack. The first expedition phase is drawing to a close. It’s been many years in the planning, and I can still recall the moment when it became my life’s mission.
