Chapter 4

Once I was in the great outdoors, my speed and my weaving and dodging were no match for the clumsy security guards and Dr. Creighton. I lost them in a matter of minutes. Tucked deep inside a thick bush that had been trimmed into a tidy box-shape, I watched as their feet pounded past. They were convinced I was still somewhere ahead of them. As soon as they'd passed, I stepped daintily from the bush and sneaked into a narrow alley between a building and a parking garage.

I'm free! I can hardly believe it! I sent a quick "thank you" to the Maker of Cats. He watches over such silly creatures as sparrows... so of course He'd been watching over my escape.

From there, I ran away from the lab for as long as I could. When I couldn't run any more, I found an out-of-the way hiding place in the branches of a tree and settled in to wait for the cover of darkness.

All around me, new sights, smells, sounds, and words assailed my senses. I closed my eyes and enjoyed the sounds and smells. They started out as a muddled jumble, but slowly, my ears and nose began to understand how to filter through and focus on particular sounds or particular smells.

After a few minutes, I opened my eyes and began to read.

It was amazing.

A bright red sign proclaimed, "The Best Burger You've Ever Had!" I didn't know what a burger was, but if it was one of the smells I had noticed—the meaty, food one—I was definitely intrigued.

I read words on buildings, cars, street signs, and billboards. There were even words on people's clothes! I read everything in sight, and then I climbed higher in the tree and read even more.

There was something both exciting and soothing about being outdoors, and in a tree no less. The sounds of the city around me subsided somewhat as it got darker. Gradually, I drifted off to sleep.

When I woke up, a new day was just beginning to dawn. I shook off the odd feeling of sleeping through a whole night instead of cat-napping. It reminded me of the drowsiness following a serum injection, and that made me want to put as much distance as possible between me and Caput Laboratories.

I had hoped to travel at night, but it seemed I'd have to do my best in the daylight. At least, today, I wasn't so distracted by all the things to read. I looked around and oriented myself. The lab lay to my right, which meant I needed to travel to the left.

But to where, exactly?

I'd just have to know when I got there. I climbed down from my perch in the tree. Sneaking around a clump of buildings, I stuck my nose down a side street. The few people I saw didn't seem to see or notice me, so I padded down the sidewalk on quick, silent paws. Hugging close to the shops at the edge of the sidewalk, I managed to avoid everyone's feet.
