TIME TO DEBATE

Who decides the winner to a debate or argument? Less formal arguments are mostly decided by the participants. Often, each side believes that it got the better of the other. If you’re truthful with yourself, though, you probably have an accurate idea of how you actually did. Are there things that you wish you had said better or differently? Were there important points that you forgot to make? That’s always a good indicator that you might have performed better. Don’t stress it. That’s what practice is for.

Formal debates, however, are scored by a judge who usually uses a “rubric” or scoring guide. A debate rubric mostly looks at categories such as clarity and organization of your argument, your claims, counterclaims and refutations, as well as your presentation style.

Who’s the G.O.A.T. among mathematicians? Make your arguments and let the judges give their scores. Ah, using math to settle a debate about mathematicians. That figures perfectly.
