Chapter 7

The Coma Ends

The news of the cure spread rapidly to all the people. Many wanted to know if they could go back to their homes on the outside. A meeting was called to tell everyone that it would still be awhile before the cave could be opened again. Some people were already packing up to go outside when Seymour called a meeting and announced, “It will take some time before we can open the cave. When we wake up the world, we do not know how they will react. We do have a large robotic police force to help control them and many delivery rovers to bring them food. Unfortunately, the crops are dormant in the fields and farmers need help getting the food distribution back to normal. Food may be a big problem. Please do not get too excited yet.” Then Max addressed the people, “There are many other problems to be solved. I will be coming around to ask for your help. Think about what you could do.” Even though his voice was identical to Seymour’s, his robotic preciseness toned down the crowd’s attitude.

On LD35, a new problem was revealed. The satellite program that emitted the coded gamma rays would wake up everyone at the same time. Special steps had to be taken to minimize panic. It took two weeks to get a few of the radio stations transmitting to the world the truth about the months they lost due to the coma. Portions of the global police were going to keep the Herrenvolk groups locked up and under close surveillance. The rovers were loaded with food and necessities to be sent to anyone that called for help. Feeniks was back at REED headquarters ready to get everyone informed and working again. On LD50, the time had come for the awakening. Seymour said a small prayer to the group, “God keep your people safe and protect us all from the evil one.” He leaned over the keyboard in front of him and pressed the return key. The computer sent a command to the satellites and everyone held their breath. People everywhere started to wake up, and the comavirus was gone.

It took three days to turn the awakening chaos into regimented confusion. A week later, people outside of the cave turned on more radio stations. Cell phones on the outside were starting to come back. Radio stations were reporting mostly good news. There were a few reports of looters and thieves, but for the most part, the people were helping each other in a kind and loving manner. The leaders in the cave decided to open a small secret door to the outside world on LD65. A select group would spend a few days making sure it was safe, and then the people in the cave could return to their homes and use cell phones again. Everything seemed to be too good to be true. Ruby was worried.

The night before opening the secret door for the scouting group,
