Amy

After Rachel left, Amy settled back down on the couch. She turned from one side to the other, worried she was staining the dark blue fabric with even darker spots of sweat. She was tired of resting, and it hadn’t made her feel any better. The pain still stabbed at the back of her eye and ran down her neck. She slid her legs over the edge of the couch. She stood and trudged across the room. She started up the stairs. At each step, she stopped for a moment before moving to the next.

In the master bathroom, she splashed cold water on her face and patted it dry. She stripped off her wrinkled blouse and replaced it with a white T-shirt. The soft cotton made her feel cleaner, somehow victorious over the knifing pain. She went back into the bathroom and applied moisturizer, a light covering of foundation, and lip gloss. Her left eye continued to weep, preventing her from using mascara or liner. She put the contact lens in her right eye. That would have to do. She swallowed three ibuprofen capsules and then remembered the acetaminophen with codeine that Justin hadn’t used up after his root canal. She swallowed one tablet, picked up her purse, and went back downstairs, taking firmer steps this time.

Out in the garage, she climbed into the Expedition and pressed the button to open the door. She backed out and hit the remote again to close the door. She wasn’t really sure where she was going, but now that Rachel was looking after the twins, she had a few hours to focus on the Charlotte problem.

She drove out of the cul-de-sac, down Birch, past the school, and across Redwood to Crestview. Cars lined the curbs in front of the apartment complex across from Charlotte’s tiny house, a shack, really. The front yard was nothing but dried grass. Instead of drapes, a red, green, and orange woven blanket was tacked inside the window frame. If she walked onto the front porch, she would probably be able to see right into the living room because there were gaps on either side where the blanket sagged.

Curious as she was to learn the details of Charlotte’s living room and discover who else might be staying in the house, it wasn’t worth getting caught. Besides, she didn’t want to get out of the SUV, even though the migraine had started to subside as the codeine took over. All that remained was a dull knot behind her eye. She continued to the end of the street and turned toward downtown. She wasn’t really sure where she was headed. An idea was slowly forming in her mind.

If she sent a package to Charlotte, to be delivered by a uniformed carrier, it might make Charlotte wake up and see what an easy target she was. Was it possible to frighten her into realizing it was risky for a single woman to be living in such a flimsy house? She would buy something small and ship it from the office supply store.
