I woke up with a slight headache, crumpled up in a corner. I thought a thing that was kind of like the silent equivalent of a groan and reached up, covering my face with a metallic paw. Ah, apparently it took a conscious effort to change back. My first reaction was that this further dehumanized me. However, if I reflected properly, I realized that I would only be changing back into a vampire anyway. I propped myself up against something soft. There was an “umph!” noise, and I looked down.

Ursgelda stared up at me, weakly. She was rolled up against the wall next to me. I blinked at her and looked ahead to the loveseat where I had dozed off. We were clear on the other side of the room, and I don’t recall how that had happened. I guessed from Ursgelda’s indifferent shrug that she didn’t know, either. We picked ourselves up, me hitting my head on the ceiling, and then bumping my shin on the table as I made my recovery. The boat wasn’t moving, and Ursgelda seemed much better in light of this fact.

“I wonder what’s going on?” Ursgelda inquired, straightening herself out. “Boat’s not moving. We must be on land.”

We made our way up to the deck. The floor seemed uneven. As we emerged I realized why. Our mighty vessel was drawn up onto a sandy shore. We were probably sixteen feet inland. The sun was in a low rise, and morning must have snuck up on us during our trip. The nasty, green color of the peeling paint glistened like proud mud against the hull of the ship, with little flecks of multi-colored light decorating droplets of water as they gathered and rolled toward the ground.

Ray stood some distance ahead, past the sands of this empty beach and among the dried mud further out. He seemed to be soaking in the sun like Ursgelda often would during our breaks. While he stood like a man victorious, Ursgelda and I clambered off the boat. I took it in a clumsy fall, instinctively landing on all fours. Ursgelda landed smartly in front of me, either trying to look cool or doing so out of theatrics. We tottered along and stopped behind Ray. There was movement on the horizon, along a lifeless, muddy plain. In the distance, I saw a rugged plateau, and it was the only standing structure my eyes could make out.

My ears fared better. The relentless encroachment of metal rumbled in the distance. I tried keeping count, but it was impossible. There were easily more than fifty metal assassins heading our way, by sound alone. When they appeared on the horizon, slowly plugging along as if they knew we would wait for them, I concluded that my guess was a little low, but not far off. They approached with weapons in hand, marching uniformly through the mud without slowing or getting caught up. Relentless brutes, they would have trampled anything in their path.

Oh, but that man.
