EARLY ONE morning later that week, after they’d completed three laps around the reservoir, Pete, Ben, and the Jensens stopped at a small health food store on Madison Avenue. While they stood at the narrow bar waiting for their glasses of papaya and Tiger’s Milk, Ben turned to Pete. “I haven’t seen Jackie for the last two days. She okay, Pete?”

“She feels a bit punk.”

“Not serious, I hope?”

“No, no. Her stomach’s been bothering her just a bit, that’s all.”

“In the mornings?”

Pete shook his head no, but felt his cheeks flush. It hadn’t occurred to him that he might have to start fielding questions of this kind now, and he’d been caught off guard.

“Hey,” Ben continued happily. “I think you’ve been holding out on us, haven’t you? I thought I noticed something. You’ve got a blossoming woman there. I keep my eye on her. She’s expecting, isn’t she?”

“Well, I promised I wouldn’t mention it to anyone. She’s a little nervous about it still. Don’t let on you know, okay?”

Ben smiled and squeezed Pete’s arm conspiratorially. “Sure won’t,” he said.
