DENISE

Thursday, December 30

I watch Holly stride outside—tossing her hair over her shoulder, clutching her phone against her ear smugly, like she dodged a bullet—and I have to sit on my hands to stop myself from jumping up and physically wiping the big phony smile off her face. I knew she was acting suspiciously the first day I saw her again. I got a bad vibe, a strong one I couldn’t ignore, but Zoe and Calista made me feel like I was an overreacting weirdo. Violet must have told her about me, about the note I sent, and now she’s playing with my head.

“Why do you think she’d lie to us about the last time she saw Violet?” Zoe asks. Her lower lip’s jutted out and she looks deflated. Probably because Holly replaced Violet as her role model, and now she’s finally realizing her new idol isn’t as great as she thought she was.

“There’s obviously something she doesn’t want us to know,” Calista says, pacing back and forth across the threadbare paisley-print carpet with her arms crossed. “That boyfriend of hers has been calling multiple times a day and all of a sudden she’s all about answering his calls? Very convenient.” She shakes her head, then marches toward the living room window, flings the long curtains aside, and peers outside.

Janie squeezes my hand, and despite everything that’s going on, I turn to smile at her. She’s on the couch beside me, our thighs resting together, hers quivering just slightly. Meeting Janie was the one silver lining on this trip so far. It’s been a long time since I felt like this. The last time was with Violet.

“Oh, come on,” Calista grumbles. She slaps her palms against the window and makes a clicking noise with her tongue. “She caught me watching her and she’s heading through the gate to the backyard.” She dashes toward the hallway, grabbing Zoe’s hand and dragging her along. “Let’s open the sliding door before she notices so we can hear what she’s talking about. She’s acting shady.”

Zoe glances back and motions for us to join them, but I shake my head at her. I’d rather get a few more minutes alone with Janie. When she brought me to her apartment earlier, she spent the whole time showing me photos of her and Violet; then we both got choked up. We held each other for what felt like minutes but was actually over an hour. The next thing I knew, Zoe was texting me the Damien bombshell, and we left to meet her back here.

Janie strokes her thumb up the center of my palm and turns to look at me with her stunning green eyes. “Despite the shitty circumstances, I’m glad I met you.”

My pulse is suddenly in my throat, making it hard for me to get my response out. “Same.” I had no idea that my house was full of a stifling sadness until I left and came to Zoe’s, a house with no memories. Things started looking up.
