Spammy’s Grill

12:30 p.m.

Bella drove them to a new place just fifteen minutes from work on Kapolei Parkway in the Kapolei Plaza. Ten minutes away from the FBI office building and five minutes away from Spammy’s Grill, Rachel looked over from the stunning distant mountain views toward Bella with a side glance. “You do know why I need you on this assignment?”

Bella huffed, then sarcastically admonished, “Let me guess, Agent Gentry. Was it to keep King Trestle from finishing his quest to unify the Hawaiian realm? Or maybe it was to keep the children—George and Keith—from misbehaving?”

“Wow, when you put it that way, I do sound like a harsh schoolmaster.” Rachel looked down at her hands and then slapped them together. “We can’t go around taking out people like a goon squad. The Bureau’s in enough hot water. Now, to your castle dog walker. He’s no longer working for the SEALS. At best, he’s a consultant assisting us. But, that man at his worst is a rogue mercenary.”

“Justin Trestle has saved my life on more than one occasion. And, might I add, a couple of your agents too. Naturally, as a private citizen doing his civic duty.” Bella took a breath as they turned into Spammy’s. “Don’t worry about Justin. He’s already promised to watch Thor and behave. He always does the right thing—maybe not always by FBI, law enforcement, or any agency’s protocols—but it’s always the best possible scenario to protect the innocent.”

“But—” Bella paused, shocked at a sight that made her blood start to simmer. A familiar face stepped out of an HPD squad car.

“But what, Bella Walker?” Rachel opened her door to get out.

Bella closed her door and looked back to Rachel with a shrug. “If our DOJ friends or whoever shows up to pick up this monster does not follow through, I have a feeling that things will get squared. One way or another, their operator will pay for all the deaths and atrocities they caused to Myanmar.”

“You’ve got to be kidding me.” Rachel shook her head in disgust and pointed to a rotund man in an HPD chief’s uniform. The man smiled and waved as he held the door open for Bella and Rachel.

“Did you know Chief Israel Como was coming to Spammy’s?” Bella furrowed her brow and tried to cool her fiery temper.

She gave a menacing stare at the man who had almost gotten all of them killed on the War Gods case. He’d tipped off the target during their final siege in the Ko’olau Mountains. Ambushes were set up by the Yakuza-trained syndicate inside their secret compound beneath the mountain. Now looking at the corrupt chief, Bella wanted to draw and shoot the man in the head.

Rachel must have sensed that Bella wanted to do something rash. “Bella, he’s the CIA’s asset. We have to play nice for now.”

“Hello, Agents! It’s great to see you again.” Chief Como raised his enormous arm to them in a second wave.

Bella continued forward while Rachel plastered on a smile.
