âAnnalise, we could really use that paperwork.â Ingrid sat across the table from me and tried to catch my eyes. I was still looking at my teacup. âEspecially if youâre saying that Kaltenbrunner doesnât even read it. Heâs never going to know where the leak is coming from.â
The Americans wanted me to start copying the top-secret orders I had access to, and my husband had the misfortune to brag to them about it.
âHeâll know.â
âHow would he know?â
âHe will. He always knows everything. He has a sixth sense when it comes toâ¦â Me. When it comes to me. âWhen it comes to espionage. He always points out just the right people to Müller even in the most complicated cases. Heâs a very smart man.â
Ingridâs gaze was almost accusing this time.
âYou could try at least. You know that weâre always very careful when it comes to handling the information. Youâre not risking anything if you look at it closely.â
âIf you look at it closely, Iâm risking everything. Youâre the ones who get pulled out right away if something goes down; Iâll end up on the gallows, together with my husband. But you donât care about that, do you?â
âOf course we care about it.â
âNo, you donât. You only care because youâre afraid to lose a good source of information, thatâs all. You donât care who that source is. People can be so easily replaced in this game, canât they, Ingrid?â
âWhy are you talking to me like that, Annalise?â
âI know that you donât like me, Ingrid. But making me risk my life for you, Iâm sorry, thatâs a little too much.â
âYou arenât risking your life for me, darling. Youâre risking it for the sake of your country â the future, better country. Free of that Nazi plague. I think itâs a very noble goal to risk your life for.â
I didnât say anything. She was right of course.
âI can get you something thatâs being distributed through several offices. That way itâs not too incriminating.â
âThatâll do.â Ingrid finally smiled. âAnd try to get back with your old boss Schellenberg; we could really use some information from his area, too.â
They all wanted something from me. I had no other choice but to comply.
