Chapter Six

“I never dreamed of a canyon this large,” James said as he continued to look out over the expanse. “After seeing Olympus Mons, it seems like Mars is a planet of such extremes.”

“At fourteen miles elevation, it is, as you say, extreme,” Michael replied.

“The wonders of creation never end, do they?”

“No, James there is no end,” Michael replied as he also took in the scenery before him. “Tell me something, James,” Michael said after a pause.

“Yes, what would you like to know?”

“What is it like to be in doubt; to not know?” Michael asked rather innocently.

“Well, you should understand that already just based on the question you asked.”

“Of course, I understand not knowing your thoughts or your journey through life, but I don’t understand how someone cannot know the truth. I have never had the experience of doubt. It is all so alien to my experience and understanding. I’ve watched many people struggle with doubt regarding themselves, others and especially God, but I’ve never known what it is like to have this kind of doubt.”

“Michael, I’m beginning to understand how you feel. The more I learn the more I stand amazed at the blindness of people. You have probably heard the saying that seeing is believing; well, think of it as not seeing is doubt. For so long I believed I held the keys to life and the universe. Because I was so consumed with my life and the events surrounding it, I couldn’t or perhaps wouldn’t allow for other considerations. But when I realized I did not have all the answers I thought I had, well then, I began to search. My search took me to disparate places and into contact with many different people. At the time it seemed in vain, but it was all a part of the plan.”

The frustrations of life can be like trying to eat sawdust, James thought. Geoffrey’s death, and the realization of just how fragile and ephemeral life is, had contributed to James’ sense of purposelessness. Now, in hind sight, James could see how all the frustrations worked together to bring him to this incredible point.
