I was dreading Monday.

I didn’t want to see Joel, not after the way that we’d spoken to each other. And I didn’t want to see Vanessa simply because I didn’t want the reminder that she only seemed to be texting me about music, not about what was really going on. But I had to put my big-boy underwear on … because I needed a ride to school.

“Hey,” Vanessa said when I got into the back seat. “How was your weekend?”

“Nothing really happened,” I told her and Joel. “A fight with my parents, studying for a test I’m probably going to fail. You know, the usual.” I didn’t mention Marcus; I didn’t feel the need to.

“Riiiiiight …” Vanessa let her voice trail off.

“Sorry I had to cancel on you, Lee,” Joel said. I was glad that he was the one who’d brought it up; I supposed it eased at least a little bit of the tension.

“Yeah, sorry,” Vanessa continued. “My dad wanted Joel there.”

“We could totally hang out this Friday, if you still want!” Joel added.

“You sure you won’t abandon me again?” I asked. That was completely the wrong question to ask, the wrong moment to decide to be snarky.

Joel dropped his head. “Liam, I said I was sorry. But Vanessa really wanted me there. You understand, right?”

I opened my mouth, weighing my options. “Yeah, I understand. Sorry.”

Now I felt like the one in the wrong.
