Chapter Fifteen

They had breakfast in the hotel restaurant. The restaurant across the plaza didn’t open until ten, and the hotel restaurant was noted for its breakfast.

“I could get used to this,” Corey said, surveying the table laid out with fresh fruit, juices, sausage, oatmeal, scrambled eggs, and coffee.

“I could get fat like this,” Seamus said.

“Aren’t you getting old for this?” Torres asked him. It wasn’t meant to be insulting. He gestured at his temples. “You have more gray than me.”

“And I earned every one of those little bastards,” Seamus assured him, “but you’re not wrong; it’s a young man’s game. At some point I’ll have to think about retiring. I have a bit saved up.”

“I hope it’s more than a bit; you’ve been doing this forever,” Corey told him, then frowned. “What have you been spending money on? Do you even take any time off?”

Seamus nodded. “At the end of every contract I spend a bit on travel.” Their contracts were six months. “I’ve gone back to Ireland, toured the States, Italy, France…” At that thought, a small smile twitched his lips. He sipped at his coffee, set the cup down, then slapped the thick wooden table. “So. Plans? Ideas?”

“I scanned and transmitted all the documents you found to Kresge, as instructed,” Corey said. “He was going to get some eyes on them, analysts or investigators. Am I right in thinking it’s not just him, he’s still working closely on this project with the, ah, locals?” He glanced around. Nobody was close to them or overtly paying attention to their conversation, but it always paid to be careful.

Torres nodded. “El pr… the company president is in receipt of the same documents we obtained and has specialists reviewing them. Maybe it will lead somewhere.” He flashed them a quick smile. “I check in, too. They want to make sure my information is as full and complete as yours.”

Seamus fought a smile. “Bastards don’t trust any of us. Not that I can blame them, with the reported size of these oil deposits.”

Alvarez caught his eye and nodded. “I can’t decide which I want more—to find it, or not to find it. Finding it would be…” He searched for the right description. “A big problem. For everyone.”

Torres sipped at his black coffee and looked around. The restaurant was small, and most of the tables were occupied, but after a few initial curious glances at the white faces at their table, they’d mostly been ignored. Still, he leaned forward before he spoke. “Before you came down, I was talking to the desk clerk and one of the other employees. It seems the chief of police will be heading up into the mountains to search for the killers of those two men.”

“Backed into a corner on that one,” Seamus observed. “It will be a right dog and pony show, no doubt. That pudgy muppet doesn’t look like he could find arse in an outhouse. What’s the plan, to drive up hill
