Chapter Forty-Six
Rowan McNamara had long since learned there was no such thing as business hours in his line of work. No way of ever winnowing his availability to nine-to-five, or even Monday through Friday.
If anything, it was quite the opposite, his schedule closely resembling what he imagined a chefâs to be like. A profession that was predicated on service, being available whenever the customers were active.
Even if that was about the sole thing that his line of work shared with some kitchen rat slaving away over a hot stove.
Having lived such a schedule for years, Rowan had learned many times to take advantage of the rare pockets of time that did become available. A stray hour around midday to grab a quick workout. A meal thrown down between the latest Sonny Tyler stopping by, begging for assistance.
A few minutes like now to stand alone in the middle of his office, the Louisville Slugger in hand.
The short-sleeve button down heâd been wearing throughout most of the day stripped away, Rowan wore only a pair of linen cargo shorts and a ribbed tank top. Optimal attire not to interfere with his swing as he cocked the bat behind his shoulder, his entire body coiled.
A stance he held for several seconds, visibly rocking forward and back a few inches, his focus on one of the many screens playing nearby. A baseball game between the Anaheim Angels and San Diego Padres being broadcast in from the west coast, the last remaining active contest of the night.
Timing his swing with the movements of the pitcher on screen, Rowan put himself in Petco Park. A patch of vivid green grass on a warm southern California evening, the sounds and smells of the ballpark filling his senses.
Things that he would be experiencing in person if not for the misfortune that had befallen him. The wicked injury that had wrenched his knee far beyond anatomical capability, snapping every major tendon he possessed.
Catastrophic damage there was no returning from. An abrupt ending to a promising career, leaving him with little more than the signing bonus heâd got when agreeing to terms with the Cincinnati Reds.
Seed money for the empire he now oversaw.
A small consolation for the fate that was supposed to have awaited him. Nights just like those splayed across the screen before him.
A distant second place that was now also being threatened by the ongoing mess in Piketon.
Allowing such thoughts to resonate, Rowan felt his hands tighten around the base of the bat. His deltoids and biceps flexed as he timed his swing, waiting as the man on the mound two thousand miles away went into his windup and made the delivery.
A fastball high and tight, just as Rowan always preferred.
A pitch that caused him to turn hard on the calloused ball of his bare right foot, slicing the bat through the air as hard as he could.
A swing ending not with the satisfying give of a ball leaving his bat, but with the sight of Dwight appearing before him.
