Chapter 17

Charles snorted in annoyance as another gust of wind threatened to take the truck off the highway. The backend was filled with supplies that kept catching the constantly gusting wind. Kira felt the truck shudder across the road and gripped the handle hanging from the roof next to the door.

They had been on the road for over three hours making small talk when Kira suddenly fell quiet and then asked in a serious voice, “How much of the forest do you think ended up burning?”

Charles looked at her in amazement. “How should I know? Besides, why do you care?”

Kira pointed into the distance, “I don’t care, but with how hot and large the fire was when we left it should still be smoking right? A fire that large would have continued to rage for at least a day or so, so why don’t I see any smoke on the horizon?”

Charles was quiet as his face screwed up in thought, his foot gradually increasing the pressure on the gas pedal. “That is a very good question.”

They should be nearing the spot where they had been attacked, but she was right there was absolutely no sign of smoke anywhere. Thankfully, the number of vehicles on the road in this area were few and far between allowing them to pick up speed. Constantly dodging parked and abandoned vehicles was not inducive to going fast.

The vehicles behind them sped up to match his new speed. Within minutes, the edge of the forest could be seen stretching in the distance. It was too far to make out details, and since he was driving Charles didn’t feel comfortable enhancing his vision.

The truck slowed to a stop at the tree line, undamaged trees lining the torn and damaged highway. The forest itself was in perfect condition, and no one would believe that a fire had raged through that area only days before. The ruined road was the only proof that they were even in the right area.

“How are we getting past that?” Kira asked her eyes focused on the road instead of the undamaged trees.

“You’re not curious about the trees apparently having grown back within days of the fire?” He asked incredulously.

Kira cocked her hip and smirked. “I would have thought you noticed it before me.” She pointed down the line of trees. “Look at the trees farther down.”

He took a few steps back and looked down the line, noticing for the first time how they gradually grew in height to tower over the ones in front of them. “They’re growing!”

“The manual did say that everything would begin to grow faster as the mana increased in the air, but I wasn’t expecting this.” Kira was looking behind them as her father brought the truck he was driving to a stop behind their own.

“Still this is incredible, they’ve grown to their old height in only a day or two.” Charles felt a grin spreading across his face as he thought of how fast crops might grow.

Charlotte and Alli were the first to leap from the back of the truck and join them.
