Revelations
I made it to Wednesday and my second trainer of the week before I got up the guts to mention Daxâs absence. Luckily, none of the Devs asked about him or where weâd both gone on Saturday. Then again, Iâd been avoiding most meals by spending them in my room. I knew I couldnât keep it up forever, but I told myself it was good to pull away from everyone now.
Lana was right; one of us needed to get out. And it made sense for it to be me. She obviously didnât know I was the one destined to run Calderone in a year.
âKeep your elbows raised, Miss Lewis. Itâll help support your weapon,â Captain Davis commanded, interrupting my thoughts.
Raising my elbows higher, I blocked his sword with my own. We were going through slow movements with wooden weapons after mastering some basic fighting techniques last week. I couldnât help but think I was a lost cause when it came to all this, but I wasnât about to pass up some training. If there was a war coming, I planned to fight for my peopleâboth on and off the battlefield. Father would never agree to training women to fight when I made it home, so this was as good as it was going to get.
âAnd youâre sure we were given the okay to move on to weapons from Dax?â I hedged, hoping my mention of him seemed natural as I blocked another slow blow from the left.
âHis HighnessââCaptain Davis not so subtly cleared his throatââlaid out a very clear training plan for you. We are to follow it exactly while he is away.â
âAway?â I lowered my sword and straightened, forgetting my pretense of disinterest entirely. âWhere has he gone?â
âHeâs away on Gaill business, Miss Lewis. Now if you will?â He raised his brows at me as he lifted his sword again.
Mimicking his movements, I let muscle memory take over as I mulled over that little bit of news.
So Dax had left. Apparently sure enough of my safety to leave, even though heâd been so concerned just a few days ago. Or maybe he really didnât care after all. Maybe this was all part of the âdonât trust meâ side of him.
I reminded myself it didnât really matter. He was gone. Now was the time to learn what I could and work out an escape.
âThatâs it for the day, Miss Lewis. Weâll pick it back up tomorrow morning,â Captain Davis said, interrupting my thoughts again.
Wiping my brow with the back of my hand, I only nodded as I caught my breath. He gave me a reproving look, clearly knowing my head was elsewhere, before grabbing a towel from the nearby pile of clean ones and wiping his brow. Without another word, he exited through the door to Daxâs apartments.
Iâd never asked, but my guess was that they were pretty extensive and likely a lot bigger than the few rooms Iâd seen so far. And if the servantsâ quarters and guest rooms were any indication, they likely rivaled if not outshone my apartments back home.
