HER PARENTS STARTED couples counseling, while Sammy did her solo thing with Dr. Price. The first thing he did was prescribe meds to even out her moods.

She took them two days and then faked cooperating shortly after that. To pull off her charade, she stopped moping and mentioning Sara.

Her parents’ arguments did diminish, but the Montgomery household atmosphere was as tranquil as acetone. Never did she forget she was the crux of their problems.

At the end of the school year, she applied for and was hired as a part-time assistant at the local veterinary office. It wasn’t as if anyone else was jockeying for a pooper scooping job with low pay. Since she loved animals, the job was a perfect fit.

Her father was pleased, and his new attitude lowered the household fight or flight impulses he caused with his confrontational behavior. Their dinner time discussions centered on her parents’ office intrigues. They laughed at the antics of lazy ne’er-do-wells, outlandish nepotism, favoritism, or blatant misuse of power by full-blown narcissists.

At least the cracks in their marriage foundation were cemented. Once again, they acted like loving parents, and late at night, she heard them having sex again. Disgusting.

Bit by bit, all things got better. Sammy resumed her physical therapy sessions and was well enough to go back to self-defense classes. She had to continue. She needed some new moves to kick Sara’s ass!

Summer was so much better, and she rarely thought of Nysa and Sara.
