Spencer lifted my dress over my head. I stood before him in only my panties, no bra, and he certainly liked the sight of my bare chest because he muttered a string of expletives before taking my left breast almost completely into his mouth while guiding me down onto the bed.

I whimpered and sighed, feeling his nibbling and the whirling of his tongue around my nipple, his fingers inside me. Then he raked his teeth across the tip of my other nipple before sucking it into his hungry mouth. He went from right to left, consuming my body as if starved for me.

Then suddenly, he stopped. When I opened my eyes, Spencer was staring at my face. The seconds mounted, and we couldn’t look away from each other.

“I missed you,” he whispered.

“I missed you too. Why didn’t you return my calls?”

His frown deepened. “You called me?”

I felt my brows pinch. “So many times I can’t count.”

Spencer tilted his head thoughtfully. “Oh…” He flung himself next to me on the bed and rolled onto his back then covered his face with his hands, laughing into his palms.

“What is it?”

“I should’ve known.”

“Known what?” I asked, completely lost about whatever he could mean.

“Your father did something that disrupted communication between our devices.”

I shook my head ardently as I sat up. “No way. My dad wouldn’t do that.”

Spencer rolled off the bed to stand. “You think your father’s a saint?”

I felt my face squeeze into a frown. “Well… he’s not like my mother.”

“Your father does whatever your mother says, even pretending to be married to her to preserve her image.”

“That’s not fair, Spencer.”

He rammed the hem of his shirt back into his pants. “And he never told you that you had a brother. Doesn’t sound like an honest stand-up guy to me.”

My mouth was caught open, my mind unable to absorb the awful things he was saying about the only ally I had in my immediate family. Spencer’s expression was hard and detached. We’d had difficult conversations before, but this time, I felt as if my opposing position made him dislike me.

“Are you leaving?” I asked.

“Why didn’t you just come back?”

I felt exposed, so I crossed my arms over my tits. “What do you mean?”

“You could’ve gotten on a flight and flown back to Wyoming, but you didn’t.”

“Why didn’t you ever tell me about my parents?”

“It wasn’t my job to tell you about your parents.”

“But you had me investigated?”

Spencer studied me carefully. “From the first day I met you, I knew you were a parent-pleaser. I knew it because I saw myself in you. Instead of flying back to Wyoming to resume your job, here you are in this goddamn hotel, working for your mother. The only reason I didn’t say her name in front of those donors is because of you. But now I’m questioning my decision not to expose her for the political parasite that she is.”

His words made me cringe, but I tried not let him see it. Of course, he was right, but I couldn’t detach myself from whatever unknown thing tethered me to my mother.
