Day 15: Making God Priority

By His own choice, He gave us a new birth by the message of

truth so that we would be the firstfruits of His creatures.

James 1:18

My friend Janet and I were talking about the difficulty of scheduling our time with God on a daily basis. Janet is a woman dedicated to the Lord, her husband, her children and grandchildren, and the children in her elementary classroom. She is on a mission to serve the Lord throughout her busy day as a wife, mom, grandmom, and teacher. But being a late-night person, she is not inclined or dispositioned to have her quiet time in the wee morning hours. Getting up early to prepare for her school day ahead is about as much “early” as she can handle.

While going back and forth about the busyness of life and how it's so difficult to even think about setting the clock half an hour earlier, she remarked: “But you know, offering God the firstfruits of my day is what it's all about. I know that even when I don't feel like getting up any earlier than I already do, I honor Him when I give Him this part of my day.”

You may be like Janet, a late-night person who loves the Lord but struggles with early morning times with Him. When you go to bed so late, it's just hard to get revved-up for any early morning commitment—especially for one you don't have to keep!

Think with me about the first part of your day and how offering God this “firstfruit time of the day” becomes an act of worship. During Old Testament times, the firstfruit was the first gathered fruit of a harvest, and it was offered to God in gratitude. God instructed the Israelites to bring their first and their best to Him.

By offering God the firstfruit of anything, I'm acknowledging His priority in my life. I can do this by spending time with Him at the first part of my day, or by giving Him the first money before I pay for other things, or by choosing to voice Scripture with the first words I speak each day.

Firstfruits are also the first results of an undertaking. Let's say God has given you a day of feeling really good and energetic. You may choose to worship Him by setting aside time to take a walk, letting this be a “walk of thankfulness” for the energy He has given you. Or maybe you complete an assignment at work, and before you email it, post it, or announce it, you take it before the Lord, thanking Him for His clear insight and instruction, then commit this project to Him before others get involved.

This is “priority with God” kind of living—thinking about Him, praising Him, worshiping Him as the minutes and hours unfold. These thoughts and behaviors keep you centered on Jesus throughout the busyness of your day.

I understand that I should make Jesus the priority of my life, and indeed that's my goal because I love Him so much.
