Twenty-Nine

Beneath the soaring ceiling of a well-appointed lobby, Detective Walsh stood at a burled wood desk and gave his most polite smile. Unfortunately, it wasn’t having much effect. The security guard who was on the receiving end of Walsh’s friendliness continued to give an icy stare as he held a phone to his ear.

“Police business,” Walsh repeated to the guard, who merely nodded. After listening to someone on the other end of the line and mumbling something that Walsh couldn’t catch, the guard hung up.

“You’ll need to have your badge ready to show her. Lady Warner has a full schedule today-

“Lady Warner?” Noah repeated. “She’s actually a Lady?”

The guard ignored the remark and started again, “As I was saying, Lady Warner has a full schedule today so remember to keep it brief.”

“Of course,” Walsh agreed. He headed to a pair of polished brass elevator doors that lay across the gleaming marble floor of the lobby. He could feel the guard’s eyes burning a hole in his back but ignored it. Pressing the button caused a dull chime to ring and he stepped aboard. Classical music was being piped in. Walsh couldn’t discern what it was; to him, all of it sounded the same.

Arriving at the top floor, he exited on to a hardwood floor that looked like it had been hand-buffed moments before his arrival. No expense had been spared on this building. From its prime location around the corner from St. Paul’s and the London Stock Exchange, to the fresh flowers in every niche and alcove, it was obvious that this was a home to legacy wealth and power.

“Mr. Walsh?” a voice came from around the corner. A young girl with shag red hair and an outfit that Walsh thought must have come straight from an expensive boutique on Chiltern Street was looking at him expectantly.

“Detective Walsh, actually,” he said.

“I’m sorry. I’m Lady Judith Warner’s executive assistant. Please follow me.”

He did as instructed, leaving the hardwood for a plush layer of carpet that ended at a pair of thick oak doors. The assistant held one open for him and gestured inside. Walsh entered, barely registering the soft click of the door closing behind him.

The office was expansive with a bank of windows providing sweeping views over the city and the dome of St. Paul’s Cathedral. In front of them, typing daintily on a slim notebook computer was Lady Warner. Walsh noted that she was even more striking in person than in the photo on the company website. Her hair was done in a flattering style that framed her thin face and high cheekbones. She turned and peered at Walsh over gold half-moon spectacles.

“Your badge,” she said as if she was his superior.

Walsh obliged, pulling his badge out as he had done in the lobby and placing it on her desk. She looked down at it with a slight frown and then pushed it back. He scooped it up and took a seat across from her.

“I have a meeting in ten minutes,” she said, looking back to her computer.
