Amy stayed out all night. Sick with worry, Bree phoned all her friends.

Eventually, after the fourth call, Amy answered. ‘Mam, what the hell, why are you ringing at this mad hour?’

‘You never came home last night. I was worried sick.’

‘For fuck sake, Mam, I’m nearly twenty. I’m an adult. Stop treating me like a child. I told you when you dropped me off that I mightn’t make it home after the party. You know I sometimes stay with a friend if it turns out to be a late night.’

Vaguely, Bree remembered Amy saying something like that, but Rory’s visit had made her catastrophise. She saw only danger everywhere.

A few hours later, Amy arrived back. Her face was cold with anger. She pushed past her mother and went upstairs. Shortly afterwards, she arrived in the kitchen with her backpack slung across her shoulder.

‘Are you leaving now? Your bus isn’t until the afternoon.’

‘Mam, what has got into you? I’ve heard you rang all my friends’ houses at an unearthly hour demanding to know if they had seen me. I can’t believe you are still treating me like a child.’

‘I wouldn’t treat you like a child if you told me the truth.’

‘What’s that supposed to mean?’

‘Rory drove you here last night, didn’t he? You lied and told me I wouldn’t know your driver. Well?’

‘For fuck’s sake, Mam, you don’t know him – you’re living back in the past. He’s been so sound to me and is always on at me to be kind and patient with you. It was he who persuaded me to ring you on your birthday. I wasn’t going to bother when Gran reminded me. And this is how you repay him.’

‘Amy, please, You have to trust me.’

Before she could utter another word, Amy laughed harshly. ‘Trust you? That’s a joke. One of my friends told me that you lost your job with Colm. Her dad knows him well. She said you must have had a big falling-out because Colm wouldn’t talk about what happened. So, Mam, as you’re so keen on trust and honesty, how come you didn’t tell me that Colm gave you the push?’

Bree backed away from Amy’s angry face.

‘It’s complicated, love, I can’t explain now but –’

‘Oh really, well, that’s fine then. When do I have to leave college now that you’re unemployed? Dad can’t afford to put me through on his own, and he’s got the twins to support.’

‘Amy, it’s fine. I can afford it. I’ve got another job. It pays enough to keep everything on track, I promise you. You won’t have to leave college.’

‘Mam, I’m not sure what to believe anymore. Rory thinks that you may be under a lot of stress. He thinks you should get counselling.’

‘Rory should mind his own fucking business, and I’m warning you to stay away from him!’

Amy glared at her mother and shook her head. ‘There’s no talking to you anymore, I’m off.’

Her heart aching, Bree heard her front door slam.
