Chapter twenty-eight

The Feisty Trout

They will help you carry the load,

making the task easier for you.

The Book of Exodus 18:22

Perin

After a pleasant evening where good food was shared, they sat by the fire together as the night came into its fullness. Agnes, now that she wasn’t busy, asked them many questions, to which they both provided simple elusive answers. Perin realized that their story of who they were and what they were doing was woefully inadequate for anything more than a few minutes conversation. When it was time for bed, Agnes surprised them by offering to let Perin stay in the house while relegating Trace to the barn as was originally promised.

“Would you rather stay with me, Rose? I’m sure you would be more comfortable in the house after sleeping in the woods. It’s up to you,” Trace said.

“I’ll stay here. We have to leave early and I could use a good night’s sleep.”

With that answer, Hars took a lantern and led Trace out to the barn, carrying a thick blanket retrieved from a storage cupboard. As soon as they left, Agnes placed her hand on Perin’s arm and asked, “Are you okay Rose? Do you need help?”

Perin was startled by the questions. They did need help and in many ways they were not okay, but how could she explain. She wasn’t sure what she could share with Agnes. Finally, she just asked, “What do you mean?”

“I’ve got eyes and watching the two of you, it’s obvious to me that you aren’t brother and sister and several of the things you said tonight don’t make any sense. You’re not afraid of Jay, that much is obvious and it doesn’t seem like he’s your lover, but something just isn’t right here and I just wanted to make sure that you’re okay. I can help you if you need it or if you want to get away from him,” Agnes said.

Perin carefully considered her response before finally saying, “Jay is my friend and I want to stay with him. We’ve both had some trouble with the Dominion, and we need to be very careful. We’re trying to find others who can help us. People who don’t stand with the Dominion. Soldiers are looking for us, and we don’t want to bring trouble on people like you.”

“That’s very interesting Rose. Very interesting indeed. Hars and I have no love for the Dominion, so you have nothing to fear here. You can rest peacefully tonight, knowing that you will not be disturbed. Who knows what tomorrow holds,” Agnes said.

When Perin didn’t say more, Agnes took her to show her the place where she would spend the night, just as Hars came back into the house.

“Did you get’em settled old man?” Agnes asked.

“He’ll be warm in the hay loft and seems comfortable enough. Jay was a soldier and they are used to having to camp and sleep in conditions much worse than these,” Hars said.

“True enough, I was just settling Rose in for the night,” Agnes said.
