Roth read the words and repeated the name Yuriy Volga to himself. He felt a pang of guilt. It was one of the names he’d given to Shipenko. It appeared Volga was the one who’d originally compiled all this data, sourced the photographs, discovered that the nukes were being transported to the front. The information would have been destined for Laurel’s desk had it not been intercepted by Shipenko beforehand.

Too bad for Yuriy Volga, Roth thought. The Cat Stevens record had reached the end of the side and was spinning in the run-off again. He got up to turn it over when he felt the vibration of his phone in his pocket. He looked at the screen and saw that it was a message from the security detail at his front gate. He answered and said, “What is it now?” making zero effort to hide his impatience. “It’s after midnight.”

“I know, sir,” the agent said. “I’m sorry to call so—”

“Has something happened?”

“No, not really, sir. Nothing to be concerned—”

“Then out with it, for God’s sake.”

“It’s a caller, sir. She won’t take no for an answer.”

“A caller?”

“She says she works with you.”

“Laurel?”

“No, sir. The other one. The Russian.”

“Tatyana?”

“She’s saying that you wouldn’t turn her away.”

“At this time of night?”

“That’s what I told her, sir. I’ll send her away.”

What was going on, he thought. What was Tatyana doing there? A visit out of the blue like this, at this time of night, it was unprecedented. He looked down at the spread of incriminating documents on his coffee table and wondered if it was possible that her unannounced visit was a coincidence. He’d been around the block too many times to give that thought any credence.

“Tell her to give me a second,” he said, gathering up the papers and photos, as well as the envelope itself, and even the CIA files he’d taken from the safe, and bringing them over to the fire.

“Then send her up?”

“Send her up,” Roth said with a sigh, throwing the documents one at a time into the roaring flames of the fire. As he watched the flames take hold, he wondered what possible pretense Tatyana could have for this intrusion.
