II. We Donât Understand Our Relationship Dynamics
Earths and Metals relate on the Nurturing Cycle, which is a mixed bag. Earths love to nurture, but too much nurturing is usually bad for a Metal. The energy flows from Earth to Metal, which works well for both: The Metal will be the one who accepts the nurturing, and the Earth will feel great taking care of someone. The level of stability this provides an Earth/Metal relationship can often counter the extreme differences in their relationship needs. But not always.
Example: After graduate school, Margoâs son Gilbert (Metal) moved five hours away from home. A research specialist who was the last child to leave the nest, Gilbert worked long hours and rarely got home to see his parents. Deeply missing her role as an active mom, Margo (Earth) started casually âdropping inâ to visit Gilbert on weekends. At first, he welcomed her, but eventually she impinged on his time alone and he told her (kindly) that she needed to stop coming. This broke her heart, but if sheâd understood Gilbertâs âMetalnessâ she would have known he needed his space.
