The courier sat in my lap. If I didn’t call soon, it would be too late. I thought I could trust Drake, but there was still no proof that the rebels didn’t try to assassinate my mother. As much as I wanted to tell myself it was someone from inside my mother’s political party, I couldn’t be sure.

Someone rapped on my door, and I quickly shoved the courier behind a pillow on my couch. “Come in.”

Melvin opened the door, and I saw Martina in the hallway.

“What’s she doing out there?” I asked Melvin.

“Following your mother’s orders to keep track of you until tonight.”

“Seriously?” My entire body chilled. “I’m a prisoner in my own room?”

“I came to tell you everything has been arranged for tonight. You’ll be leaving at ten o’clock for an undisclosed location. Make sure you’re ready.”

“Okay.”

“And Vivica?”

“Yeah?”

He hesitated. “I thought you might want to know the police weren’t able to find Ben or his family. We think they’ve left town.”
