Mr. Mackenzie’s mind seemed to nauseate its subjects even more than Mr. Bidwell’s. Afraid to look me in the face, he sat, with his feet not reaching the ground and with his countenance averted from me, at an angle of seventy degrees; while, with the eccentricity, the volubility, and indeed the appearance of a madman, the tiny creature raved.

If Head, in his miniature cartoon of the interview with Mackenzie, has supplied us with no mean treasure for the national portrait gallery, we are also fortunate in having a companion piece to it. Robina Lizars, in her Humours of ’37, recalls an eyewitness’s description of Head’s first official appearance, when he assumed the throne in the Legislative Council to open the 1836 session of Parliament.
