CHAPTER 13

If a Black Death could be spread throughout the world once in every generation, survivors could procreate freely without making the world too full.

Tuesday evening, Jennifer wiped the corners of her mouth with a paper towel. “I couldn’t eat another bite!”

“We’re going to get spoiled.” Lucas sat beside her on the picnic table and held her hand. “We won’t want to go home.”

“I know. We’re certainly getting the royal treatment around here.” She thought of home. She wished she had a phone to call Bob.

Jennifer looked across the table at the thin man with glasses, who was still finishing his BBQ pork sandwich. “Chip, you run comms for the compound, don’t you?”

“Yes, ma’am.” Chip’s eyes lit up like he’d been addressed by a movie star.

“Would it be possible for you to call someone over the radio?”

“Sure, do you know which frequency?”

“Do you listen to Resistance Radio out of north Georgia?”

Chip nodded adamantly. “The voice of the Free American Front. Of course. We all do. I even set up a repeater for the folks down south. Resistance Radio has a good station—by good I mean powerful. But we’re close to the cut-off point for reception. They broadcast via NVIS, which can reach out roughly 400 miles. We’re about 350 miles away, by my estimation.”

Jennifer felt a little lost by all the technical jargon. She glanced over at Lucas who seemed to be tracking fine. She directed her attention back to Chip. “So, do you think you’d be able to contact that station?”

“Should be able to,” said Chip. “As long as the weather doesn’t give me any trouble. What message would you like me to relay?”

“Call Sergeant Brooks and ask him to get a hold of Tater. Have him take a message to my father that we’re okay but might be a few days.”

“Yeah, sure.” Chip got up from his seat. “Tell Tater to get word to Jennifer Martin’s father. You’re okay but could be a few days.”

Jennifer motioned for him to sit back down. “Yes, but finish your dinner first. It’s not urgent.”

Chip’s smile quivered. “Ms. Martin, you don’t understand.”

“Understand what, Chip?”

“It’s a real honor to do this for you. I mean sending a message for you—to Resistance Radio, no less. You folks are legends around here. You’re heroes!”

Jennifer blushed. “You folks are the heroes, Chip. You, John Dylan, Gator, Klem, all of you.”

Chip seemed to appreciate the compliment. He stood tall and proud. “Yes, ma’am. I’ll be right back.”

“You’re bigger than Marilyn Monroe to these people,” whispered Lucas.

She bit her thumbnail. “I’ve tried to tell them that you were the mastermind every chance I get.”

He grinned and leaned in for a kiss. “We both know that’s not true.”

“You exaggerate my role in the whole thing.” She kissed him, then pulled away. “No goodnight kiss in the cabin tonight. Things nearly got out of hand last night. Once we get inside, you go to your room and I’ll go to mine.”

He kissed her once more. “You’re breaking my heart.”

“Two more weeks,” she said.
