Your Diet Can Make Fibromyalgia Worse

There are two primary reasons that fibromyalgia patients have problems with certain kinds of food. The first of these is directly related to the fact that your sensation threshold is greatly reduced. Instead of being able to eat a large variety of foods with minimal or no side effects, you are now extremely sensitive to the ways in which your body reacts to foods. As a result, what used to be a mild bloating sensation after a heavy meal may now feel like unbearable pain and cramping in your abdomen. Different foods can contribute to aches and pains, headaches, fatigue, digestive problems, and even depression. Later in this chapter, you’ll learn how to figure out which foods might be problem foods for you. The second problem with regard to food and fibromyalgia is that a prolonged activation of the fight-or-flight response can actually alter your body’s ability to utilize, store, and release carbohydrates.
