Chapter Twenty

At nine o’clock the following morning, Kirkby brought Cathal Waters and Ciara Nestor into her office.

“Right, team, we have just two days to make some serious progress with this case, or it’s going to be taken off our hands, and that won’t go well for any of us. So, we need to get on and make some headway, preferably today. Cathal, have you any fresh ideas?”

“I was thinking, boss. So far, we have focussed entirely on Mr Roche. I know it’s a bit of a long shot, but could it be that the woman was actually the intended victim all along? We haven’t really investigated her at all,” Waters said.

“Hmm… interesting. If only for the sake of thoroughness, maybe you should go out to her workplace and speak to her colleagues. See if there’s anything odd there. I think someone said she worked part-time in the school at Wellingtonbridge.”

“Yes, that’s right. I’ll go out there this morning and see what I can find out,” Waters said.

Kirkby noted that the man was still looking smarter than he had been when she first met him, and now he was coming up with ideas all on his own. Things were improving!

“What about you, Ciara? Anything?” Kirkby said.

“I’m still analysing the paperwork from Frank Roche’s shed. There’s loads of it. I may be onto something, but I’m not saying till I’ve done some more work. Have you any ideas, boss?”

“I’m still uneasy about those Tiverton trucks, but after yesterday’s little performance, I’d better go easy. Frawley was hopping mad. I’m going to do a bit more digging here. Oh, by the way, did we bring in the Roches’ vehicle? I think it was parked at the back of the house in the laneway.”

Waters and Nestor looked at each other blankly.

“I take it that’s a ‘no’ then. Ciara, can you get onto transport and get them to fetch it in. I want forensics to go over it in case there’s anything of interest,” Kirkby said.

“Eh… we don’t really have a transport section, boss. We usually use a local garage with a tow-truck,” Nestor said.

“Christ! OK, well then get forensics to organise it. We don’t want greasy paw prints all over the damn thing contaminating any possible evidence.”

“Right, boss. I’ll get onto it when we’re finished here.”

“Have either of you anything more on our elusive Spaniard, Hernandez?”

Waters and Nestor looked blankly from one to the other.

“Terrific! Look, guys, we need to up the energy a bit here. Cathal, can you follow up on that? Check the airports and the ferry ports. See if he has been coming and going recently and let’s see if we can’t run the bugger to earth. He has to be somewhere. Right, well that’s all we can do for now. Let’s meet again at five o’clock for an update.”

When the meeting was over, Ciara Nestor came back into Kirkby’s office.

“Sorry, boss. Superintendent Frawley is looking for you,” she said.

“Fantastic! Thanks, Ciara.”

Kirkby trooped up the stairs to the top floor where the superintendent had his spacious, and quite luxurious office, with a heavy heart.
