Chapter Eleven

Victoria had needed some time away from the others. That was why she volunteered to go and find Sven. Her emotions were all churned up inside. Something had been going on tonight, something that the majority of guests had not been privy to.

Who had Pauletta been speaking to?

What if she had been talking to Sven?

Victoria paused and sat on the bottom step of the staircase.

Sven had come into the drawing room and told them he had not seen his wife. Yet someone had been speaking to Pauletta, and they had not been speaking in English. What if Pauletta had found him and they were having a private argument in the tapestry room?

Victoria felt uneasy; if that were the case could it be that Sven was responsible for Pauletta's death? Had he lied about seeing her? Had he lied about her being missing, knowing full well exactly where she was? Had they argued in the tapestry room, and then the argument had somehow moved to the ballroom? What if he had lost his temper with her?

Victoria tried to tally up the man she thought she knew, against the possibility that he could be a killer. Sven had always been kindness and charm. She had never seen him lose his temper. Even when she had thrown her engagement ring back at him.

Of course, that had been his fault and he had been abashed and apologetic over everything, as well as prepared to take her wrath. She had yelled and shouted at him, called him some horrible names. But he had never responded.

Against that was the fact that his bowtie was missing. She felt in the secret pocket of her dress and pulled out that bowtie before putting it back again.

Could it be she had not known the man she had almost married as well as she thought she did? After all, he had betrayed her because he didn't love her. At the time she had been utterly convinced that he was devoted to her. She had also been convinced that she loved him. Now everything seemed strange in her mind, she couldn't place her thoughts together.

She rubbed her eyes, weary and tired.

For that matter, why had Sven been hovering around her when she was investigating the ballroom? Was it really because he was keeping an eye on her, concerned that there might still be a killer on the loose? Or was it because he was keeping an eye to see if she found anything that she shouldn't?

Victoria didn't know what to believe, but she knew she needed to speak to Sven. The fact that he was now missing was troubling her. Where had he gone since they last spoke? Could he have slipped away?

He was a diplomat and that gave him diplomatic immunity. If he had killed Pauletta, he could probably simply vanish from the country, get himself back to Sweden and nothing could be done about it. Maybe he had already left while they were distracted.

She started to move through
