Chapter 10

As the time ticked past slowly, Janet amused herself by trying to guess the order in which the inspector would interview everyone. Since he’d started with the staff, she assumed that Sammy would be next, and she was correct. Then she guessed that he’d talk to Audrey before starting on the family, but after Sammy, John was the next to be called. After John, the inspector sent for Sarah. She’d only just left the room when Stuart appeared in the doorway.

“If anyone is hungry, I have everything ready in the kitchen for you to put together your own sandwiches. The inspector has agreed that you can all move into the kitchen and then into the dining room to eat,” he announced.

Janet was one of the first to her feet. It wasn’t so much that she was hungry, it was more that she was bored. The tension in the room had been mounting all afternoon as well, and she was hoping the change in scenery might help diffuse some of that.

Stuart led them all into the kitchen. Janet’s mouth watered as she looked at the large trays that were spread across the huge island at the centre of the room. One held various types of bread rolls and sliced bread. A second was filled with thickly sliced ham, turkey, and roast beef. Next came a variety of lettuce leaves with onion and tomato slices. Small pots held several different condiments. Bowls filled with different salads rounded out the selections.

“I’m not hungry,” Rachel said flatly.

“Neither am I, but I’m going to eat,” Phillip replied. “It may be a while before we get another chance.”

“You say that as if you’re afraid you might be arrested,” Margaret said as she pushed past everyone to grab a plate.

“If anyone should be worried, it should be Brandon,” Phillip shot back.

“What did I do?” Brandon asked.

“Where are your shoes?” Phillip asked pointedly.

Brandon looked down at his slippers and shrugged. “I left them on the patio at our cottage. Someone must have taken them.”

“Or maybe you wore them back to the house when you came back in the middle of the night to kill Grandfather,” Phillip countered. “Maybe you stepped in so much blood that you had to abandon your shoes with the body.”

“Phillip!” Margaret snapped. “That’s quite enough. Brandon didn’t kill Grandfather. Why are you so certain there was a lot of blood around the body? Maybe he was strangled, or someone held a pillow over his face. It sounds as if you know far too much about what happened to Grandfather.”

Phillip flushed. “I was just offering one possible explanation for what happened,” he replied. “I simply can’t imagine why anyone would have stolen Brandon’s shoes.”

“Unless there is someone on the island who doesn’t belong,” Stephanie said. “Maybe that someone killed your grandfather and stole Brandon’s shoes.”

“I think that seems highly unlikely,” Phillip replied. “The family has owned Farntopia since before I was born. To the best of my knowledge, we’ve never had any intruders in the past.
