CHAPTER THIRTEEN

When I check the Analytix the next morning, my name has taken a dramatic fall in the Volx. At least, as dramatic a fall from fourth place can be, for me.

All the way back down to the bottom.

“I heard she ignored a lot of people at Ace,” says a gossip reporter. “It’s like—just because you’re in the Famoux doesn’t mean you get to be a brat!”

“That’s an awful outfit,” somebody tells their friend, scrutinizing paparazzi shots. “Who wears that?”

“She’s absolutely irritating,” says someone else. “Who does she think she is?”

Almost every conversation I listen in on is a variation of this. Compliments and kind words come and go, but my brain can’t filter them in. All I can do is listen in horror as a stronger, louder few take special note of my every action, singling out my slight turns or small faces as if they were life-defining personality traits.

And all I can think is, what happened?

It takes everything in me not to burst into tears as Norax clicks into the Consensus charts. It appears my positives are still the same as they were the last time we checked—beautiful, interesting, refreshing.

But there is one new thing in the list of negatives, and it may as well be in all caps.

“Chapter Stones,” Norax reads out.

“What?” I ask.

I expect her to be just as confused as me, but Norax seems to get it. Her lips are tightened into a thin line. “Of course,” she says, setting the tablet down. “I should’ve known when I saw the photos.”

“Known what?”

“They thought you and Chapter were on a date last night.”

My mouth drops open. Oh, no. Someone must’ve seen the patio. Was it Cartney? I reel back, panicked.

“It wasn’t a date,” I insist.

“You two have been seen together multiple times now,” Norax says, piecing it together. “He was even at your interview with Sam.”

“He just stopped by,” I say.

“None of the others did.”

The Analytix room’s door clicks open, and Lennix enters, calm as ever. He holds a peppermint tea in one hand, a stack of tabloids in the other. “So,” he says, slowly. “Can anyone tell me what happened last night?”

I dare to flip through the stack. Each headline is more outrageous than the next. One claims I’ve ensnared Chapter in “a web of lies,” whatever that means, and another insists I killed Bree in order to become a member and get to him. I scan the pages, and there’s no mention of the patio. No pictures. Good. That makes me exhale.

Norax glances at the headlines and sighs. She stares off at the stool behind the glass. “They love him best when he’s alone,” she whispers. “That way, they don’t have any threats.”

“Who’s they?” I ask.

But I already know. His fans. His massive, unfathomably dedicated fans. My memories of home can confirm this. Any rumor of Chapter and some costar or model was always wailed about upon inception and celebrated upon closure. What Kaytee said at the art show about him and Lex comes back to mind.
