We pull up on a drive of a house that isn’t mine. The lights are off, curtains closed. He’s talking but I can’t hear what he’s saying because I can’t think of him as my friend any more. Nothing he can say will change my mind.

I get out first and go round to him in the driving seat. He goes to open the door and I drop my phone on the ground. He does what I predicted he would do because Simon’s a nice person.

When he bends to pick it up, I slam the car door against his head so hard that he slumps in half. He didn’t make a sound. I slam it again, and a trickle of blood flows from his right ear.

I push him back into the car and walk calmly round to the other side.

It takes three heaves to get him onto the passenger seat. I take the glass out of his pocket, along with his phone and wallet. I look closely at his face – there isn’t a flicker of life – before scrolling through his messages. The most recent thread is from Chloe.

17:25 Chloe: Good luck. You can do it. All we need is that DNA and the police will take us seriously. Finally, justice for Rachel and Siobhan!
