Pudong, Shanghai, China

Gideon stomped through the puddled sidewalk of Gaohan Road, in a city he’d never visited before. He had exhausted the rest of his Acolyte contacts to discover where Epsilon’s chemical plant, one responsible for producing the compounds specifically associated with fentanyl, was located. The Shanghai district was one of China’s most vital areas. It contained the Shanghai Stock Exchange, as well as a plethora of impressive skyscrapers. But Pudong also possessed the Port of Shanghai, where Gideon was right now.

Finding the chemical plant was easy enough, once he knew the name. Google gave him the rest of the information he had needed, such as the address. He was on his way now, having used public transportation after parking his rental car several miles away. He didn’t want anyone that was looking for him to spot him early, at least not until Gideon wanted to be seen. It was like fishing sometimes. All Gideon had to do was announce his presence, then wait for the fish to take the bait and come to him.

The hour was late, and the rain heavy. Very few people were out and about. Those who’d been caught in the rain rushed around, heads covered, shielding themselves the best they could. Like a lot of port areas that housed factories, or in this case, a chemical plant, the air reeked. The pungent odor was one that would go home with you in your sinuses and clothing. It was a stench that worsened the closer you got to the water.

Gideon was nearly there now. He had no idea if his target would be there. From what Gideon could tell, the man spent very little time in his office, opting to work from home instead. Gideon needed the home address. That was the real reason for him coming here. He planned on interrogating one of the factory workers, a supervising manager perhaps, to get the priceless intel.

If only I had his name, he thought, snarling as he stomped through a semi-deep puddle.

There were several names attached to the chemical plant, but none of them revealed much. To the untrained eye, the clouded information surrounding the names would merely look like those of silent partners, men who preferred to stay out of the public eye. But there was an issue with the plant’s list of partners. Based on Gideon’s research, none of them existed outside of being on paper. The Acolyte connection to this place had been confirmed. Now, all Gideon needed to do was figure out which of the false identities belonged to Epsilon.

His pocket vibrated. The only people that had this number were those who had helped him get this far. But those contacts had urged him to never contact them again for fear of Acolyte retaliation. Gideon had been shocked to learn how quickly his own betrayal had spread throughout the underground intelligence community. The only contacts that would actually take his calls were the ones loyal to him and not the Acolyte cause. While less reliable as a whole, one of them had pulled through for him, big time.
