I stare up at the three-story building in front of me.

The tall structure is gray slated with large windows made from sheer glass. It’s one of the oldest places in town.

Chills run down my spine, and I clasp my hands together to stop the trembling. My throat parches as I stare at the people standing at the entrance holding signs and protesting. Even in the wintertime, they still showed up.

A lump forms in my throat, and I wonder how I can get past them without being trampled. I keep my head low and wrap my arms around my trench coat. It’s stopped snowing, but the icy wind still hangs around the air.

I don’t meet anyone’s eyes as I tiptoe to the entrance. I’m just about to enter the glass doors when someone calls out, “Sinner!”

I pause. My shoulders tense and I eye the name of the place engraved on the glass.

Maya’s Medical Center.

I think it’s wise if I keep moving forward. I take a step, but I collide with a body that steps in front of me. Inhaling sharply, I hold my breath as I meet the eyes of the beady man in front of me. His cheeks have reddened, and he glares with an ugly sneer on his lips. “You’re a baby killer,” he snarls in a deep voice.

The edges of my eyes narrow as I study the prick in front of me. A woman comes alongside him and shrieks, “Have some shame! You’re not God to take someone’s life!”

I don’t even know if I’m pregnant yet. My period is late… I thought I can stop by the clinic and do some testing. I don’t reply to them because they don’t know me or my story.

Ignoring their judgment, I try to side-step them but two more people behind me thump and press their chests too close to my back. Have they ever heard of personal space? A crawling sensation falls over my chest and my breathing intensifies, coming out in rough, uneven exhales. Eyeing the people surrounding me, I feel caged. Completely trapped.

The glass door opens, and a security guard comes running out with his hand to the pistol in his holster. Immediately, the people surrounding me edge away.

“Ma’am, are you alright?” the guard asks.

I nod before he gently grabs my arm, and we move along.

Another voice chimes, “You will go to Hell! This is a sin.”

Lord… Please don’t let me kill someone today.

I pause and slowly turn around. I meet the eyes of the red-faced man who had spoken earlier. Setting my jaw, I cocked an eyebrow. “I’m here today because I might have an unwanted baby in my stomach that I didn’t ask for.”

His eyes widen and he finally shuts up.

I shake my head and my lip curls up in disapproval.

“You reek of privileged bullshit,” I call him out. “It’s my womb, and the last thing I need is a shitty man dictating my life. If you’re that worried about babies dying, then why don’t you go
