Chapter 13

On their return from Tain, Dominic had gone straight to bed, crashing out in the back room of the team’s offices in Inverness. Carrie-Anne, on the other hand, had waited up for the diamond expert to arrive. The man hadn’t been advised of where the diamonds came from, or any of the backstory around them, but he was a trusted colleague of the service. He would come in, do his job by giving his thoughts on the items laid before him and then promptly leave, forgetting he was ever there.

Kirsten walked into the conference room at the rear of the offices and saw Carrie-Anne, dressed as ever in a neat skirt with heels and jacket. Beside her was a small man with round glasses, who brought his own light to the table. Underneath that light was held one of the diamonds and he was examining it closely with an eyeglass.

‘Any luck with it?’ asked Kirsten when she came in.

She saw the little man turn around and take a look up and down at her. He seemed to almost dismiss her and went back to looking at the diamonds. Maybe it was the black cargo trousers she was wearing or the simple T-shirt over the top. Carrie-Anne certainly cut more of the office boss figure and with Kirsten being younger as well, the man could be forgiven for not recognising she was the one who had called him in.

‘I said, do we have any luck?’

‘Mr. Adams here is still looking, boss,’ said Carrie-Anne at which point the man almost choked, before putting his eyepiece down, turning around, and walking serenely over to Kirsten extending a hand.

‘They’re fine diamonds,’ said Mr. Adams. ‘The majority of them would be worth a reasonable amount of money but they’re nothing special. They’re not unique like the one you were asking me to look for.’

Kirsten could see the man staring up and down at her attire and then up to her hair, which currently she had tied back. ‘Dom’s down below sleeping,’ said Carrie-Anne. ‘Thought he could grab a nap while we got this checked through.’

‘You could have as well. You should’ve called me,’ said Kirsten. ‘I’d have looked after Mr. Adams. Please, sir, don’t let me stop you getting back to your task.’

Carrie-Anne stepped to one side with Kirsten, allowing the little man to take to the table again and muse over the stones that were there.

‘Where else are we?’ asked Kirsten in a whisper.

‘Not far at all to be honest, boss. If the stone isn’t here, we’re not sure where the rest have gone. We’ve tailed Hutchinson and his men. So far, all we’ve come up with is finding some more of the diamonds. As for the one that was taken by the foreign gentleman, we’re not sure where it is. Unless Justin has got some feelers out.’

‘I think Hutchinson is still the one to watch. It may be up to Justin to get our next deal.’

‘What do we do, boss, if that doesn’t come through?’

‘Well, you can get down to the Job Centre first,’ said Kirsten.
