Bill Clifford was not pleased.

"Are you out of your head, going into Germany? The last time I was in Innsbruck, Franz told me about Kurt Kesselmeier. If that nincompoop discovered your mother was Jewish, you can bet the Gestapo knows by now."

"Oh, Bill, I have a new passport. They'll never trace me."

"Things are much tighter since the war began. That form you filled out—it's a serious crime, even a capital crime, in the Reich, to give false information on an official document."

"The customs inspectors in Konstanz are naive and inexperienced. They would never even think to check against old records."

He sighed. "No matter what I say, you will go again, won't you?"

"Yes," she said, firmly, "as often as I can. Franz will get a week's leave at Christmas, and I'm going to meet him then."

"I don't know, Alex...I don't like it." His expression was dubious. "And another thing. If the Nazis realize you're working for me, that would do you no good. They have never looked on the Fund with favor."

"But the Nazis don't know."

"Don't kid yourself. If you think they aren't aware of every foreign resident in Zurich, who they are, what they do, whom they see."

"What difference does it make? We're Americans."

"You're the one who's naive, Alex. If the director of the American Arts Fund were to be picked up by the Gestapo, yes, it would create an international incident. But for an American woman, married to an Austrian? There would be a very quiet protest, indeed."
