Chapter 14
Anna Hunt walked along the stony grey path through the London park that she knew well. She was heading for one corner of it, one that generally wasnât sought after by most of the London public. A particular area with a large clump of trees and a bench deep amongst them. Often when she wanted to think, she would take that path, sit there knowing that she wouldnât be disturbed, not even by dog walkers passing through, for that particular area even smelled slightly due to a badly placed sewer not far away.
It wasnât the smell that Anna went for; it was the solitude, the chance in the busy space of London to find somewhere without people. Anna was an operator through and through, but she liked times to reflect and think though she was a woman who could act and act quickly. Her mind was always active, looking at the different angles of the situation, working out the possible outcomes and how to adopt them, manipulate them, and come out with what was the best solution either for her or her Service or whatever needed to be done.
The air was crisp and chilly, but the sun was shining as she walked along, seeing the everyday Londoner out and about. There was a man running along the lake with shorts that really didnât suit him. He smiled as he passed a woman running the other way and Anna imagined heâd simply come out in them to meet her. Beyond him was the dog walker, the dog on the lead, one of those extendable ones, although it was so loose she wondered what was the point of it.
Sheâd often thought of having a dog, but she was away too often. She thought about the companionship, someone who she could lavish affection on without worrying about if she would be betrayed, without worrying that the animal needed more from her than she could give, but a dog wouldnât work. After all, Anna was away so often and the dog needed some sort of stability, a home life. It needed someone it could run up to when they came through the door every day, a lap of its owner to sit on as they read a book or watched television or sat by the fire. Someone to take it out for walks. No, Anna needed to be alone in life. She had put distance between herself and her sister, and that had nearly gone wrong. Until she was clear of this life in the Service, Anna wouldnât have anyone . . . or anything too close.
She followed the path as it bent off, and she could smell the slight stench of sewage as she headed towards the dark copse of trees. Rounding the largest one, she saw a man sitting on the bench, smart black trousers, black shoes, but with a brown leather jacket. It was one of the longer ones that reached down past his hips and certainly only worn by an older gentleman.
