CHAPTER 22

Reid was nursing his beer slowly, trying to remain sociable with the crew and keep his wits at the same time. The rest of the team didn’t have qualms about drowning their stress in lots of alcohol, and Reid couldn’t blame them. He wished he could do the same, but his conspiracy mind wouldn’t shut off. Tinfoil hat though he may be to everyone else outside this facility, here he was actually right to be suspicious of a potential time pirate. Time pirate? Really? Sounds like an awful B-movie. Whatever the case, he was going to stay adequately sober.

Earlier, they had all gone back to their respective rooms to refresh, grab a shower, and generally try to wash away 1944 Normandy. When they met back up at the cafeteria, they had altered their work clothes for casual clothes. Reid didn’t own much except t-shirts, jeans, and his classroom oxfords, so he went with a plain black T-shirt. Ben’s outfit was an olive button-up shirt and khakis. He resembled a safari guide. Allie had changed into a pink button-up shirt, completely open to reveal a white crop top with bare midriff, and leggings with pink flowers to match her opened blouse. She looked like a fashionable teen heading to the mall. Sara had changed into a silky white blouse tucked into form-flattering jeans and boots, with her hair loose behind her shoulders. And curiously, no glasses.

Ben had knocked back more beers than anyone (Sam Adams, true to threat), and still seemed fairly normal. Allie was finishing her second wine cooler (they still make those?) and was visibly swaying. She was also a much smaller person than the others. Sara was on her third beer (Budweiser, a choice which Reid found intriguing) and had only minor physical indications of being buzzed, but her mannerisms and speech had slid all the way over into an unrecognizable personality. It was like Sara had been possessed by a fun person.

“The guy’s a dick,” said Sara in response to Ben’s comment about Marks being under investigation. “Grabbed my boobs once in the hall.”

“He what?” stammered Ben.

“And you didn’t say anything?” said Allie.

Sara shrugged. “Why? If I did, it might’ve shut down the project.”

“So, the guy’s a jerk and a rapist,” said Allie.

“Nah,” said Sara. “He doesn’t have the guts to be a rapist. He pushed me up against the wall, trying to intimidate me, but – pfft! I’ve fought off high school boys that were stronger. Guy’s a wuss. I shoved him, slapped him, and he ran off like the little wuss that he is.”

“Geez,” said Allie. She shrank in her seat a little. “I woulda been scared.”

Sara’s eyes darted around, then she leaned in conspiratorially. “Ehh, I kinda was. More about losing my job, though. I can take care of myself.”

“We noticed,” said Reid. “You fending off those soldiers in your underwear is a sight I won’t be forgetting in a wh… Uh, I mean, it was impressive. You know what I mean.”

Sara flashed
