Suggestion 28:

Go to Therapy

It’s another thing to try. It’s not a necessity, but it is an option. When I started my own recovery process 28 years ago, I went to a therapist for ten sessions. It was interesting, but I didn’t feel I got much out of it. But I did. I was young and not quite ready to understand what he was offering. But it was going in. One, two, even five years after those ten hours, his words began to come back to me and make sense at a deeper level. Even now, 28 years later, having fully integrated those sessions into how I live my life, I am amazed at how powerful those mere ten hours were and how often I think of them.

It’s an option I feel is worth trying. I think of going to a therapist like going to a medical doctor. If you had pneumonia or cancer or a broken bone, would you go to a doctor? Would you listen to what he or she had to say about how to get better? It’s the same with mental health. If you are disconnected from your feelings and have mental pneumonia, it’s okay to go to someone who is an expert in that field to listen to what he or she has to say about how to get better. And, as with choosing a doctor, make sure you’re not going to a quack. Choose carefully. Reread page 92 on this topic.

Now it’s time to go back and do these exercises. It’s nice you read them, but you have to DO them to benefit from them.
