The rich scent of new leather filled Harry’s nose when he slid behind the wheel of Nora’s BMW and moved it down the street, well away from Saqqara’s entrance. Eventually the hotel would track it down from the GPS after Harry and Nora were long gone.

This new development didn’t sit well with him. Carrying on his search with a government agent? It went against every instinct in his body. A few months ago, when he had uncovered an original manuscript introducing King Arthur that had landed him in all manner of trouble, he had made it out alive by listening to his gut. That was one lesson his father taught him. Another? Guard your trust. Never hand it out freely. Which is exactly what he felt he was doing now. Harry reached for the amulet tucked under his shirt. He could use luck right now. He didn’t trust Nora. If her immunity deal checked out? Maybe then. He gripped the amulet, checking that it was tucked out of sight beneath his shirt. No need to let Agent Doyle see it. Who knew what questions she’d have then.

He watched as Nora came back into sight after going through the entrance and dipping below the horizon. She handled the bike easily, moving at pace to the parking area where Harry’s car waited alongside other vehicles and motorcycles that likely belonged to the team working the site. A tent stood a hundred yards from the parking lot, far enough away for them not to notice Nora’s engine.

He saw her reach down and cut the engine, then coast the last fifty feet before hopping off to push the bike alongside Harry’s car, which she jumped into after ducking down by the front mudguard. She drove through Saqqara to the front entrance, where two police cars were parked, with officers standing in front of them. As she approached, one of the officers lifted a hand and motioned for her to stop.

Harry’s gut clenched when the officer motioned for Nora to roll down her window. A brief conversation later the officer stepped back and waved Nora through. She exited and made a left turn. The officers did not watch her go.

She’s smarter than I thought. Harry turned around to confirm it. Sure enough, his white Toyota appeared from around the corner behind him. Nora parked well back, leaving the engine running.

“What was that at the gate?” Harry asked when he walked alongside the Toyota.

Nora slid over to the passenger seat. “They told me to slow down.”

“They didn’t ask for identification?” Harry climbed into the driver’s seat, unslung the messenger bag and put it in Nora’s footwell.

“Of course they did. They lost interest when I told them I worked for the Ministry of Antiquities, and I was late to pick up an executive.”

Harry stopped moving, his hand on the gear shift. “They bought that?”

“After I fired off a few Egyptian curses.”

“In Arabic?”

Nora’s lip turned up at the corner. “Hal ’ant mutafaji ’iinaa ’atakalam alearabia?” She said it again, in English.
