Chapter 15

~ Elwyn ~

~ The Nineteenth Day of Gilkarin ~

~ in the Twenty-Fifth Year of Drac’nor ~

It rained all night. The rain was still falling when we broke camp the following morning. Weather like that made me wish for home again. In the caves of Drac’nor, one never had to worry about such things. There was never a hot sun beating down, and water never fell randomly. Water flowed in certain places, but it was consistent and confined to specific areas. The temperature was usually steady there, and the humidity constant. Out here, weather behaved like a wild animal. It did whatever it wanted and cared nothing for those who had to suffer it.

Hagas considered the rain a good thing. The army we were trying to outrun had many wagons whose pace would be considerably slowed by the rain-soaked roads. The weather might delay them by a full day, possibly even two. What he didn’t mention was the amount of time that we would lose due to the rain. Still, he was probably right. The rain would slow the soldiers more than us.

The mountain pass was empty when we passed through it. The soldiers must have gathered their dead, and the rain had washed away what had remained of the fortifications. It seemed wrong that there was no sign of what had happened here a few nights ago. So many men had lost their lives, many at my own hand.

I could see them in my mind’s eye as we walked, and their cries echoed in my ears. The area still seemed to smell of blood and death, although the rain had washed away the physical residue of the battle.

Someday I would return and set up a memorial for the dead. There should be something to remember them by, even if they were the enemy. I wondered how many of them had left behind families, children, or other loved ones. Would they learn of this day and hate me for it? They would be justified if they did.

No one said a word until we cleared the pass and were back in the thick woods typical of that region. Further south and east the forest would break into foothills, but I doubted we could get that far. My plan was to return home as soon as possible. I had had more than enough of the outside world, and we could all benefit from a return to normality, if only for a little while.

All members of the fang had scales now, and we were taller and broader than we had been when we left Drac’nor. I suspected that each of us would have our full dragonmaster bodies by the time we reached home. We would still be far from mature with full control of our dragon blood, but at least we would look the part.

That thought reminded me of Tarron. I hoped his healing was coming along well, but there was no way to find out. His progress in fighting the madness was likely to be hampered by this setback.
