Curriculum for Missions Education

The curriculum that is used for missions education should be centered on Scripture. Church members should already be students of the Word. When selecting curriculum, it is vital to see how Scripture is used throughout to help promote missions.

Focusing study on the early church will help the church to be missional. A thorough study of the missionary journeys of Paul will help the church to see the importance of teaching missions. Accountability is constant throughout the early church. Combating heresy was a common theme in helping new converts to grow.

A study of Acts1:8 can help the church capture the vision of starting missions locally. There are also opportunities for the church to participate in associational, state, national, and international mission efforts. It is important to help the church understand needs, whether local or across the world.

Curriculum choice should always target a need. After the curriculum series or event is completed, the church should evaluate to see if the need was met. There is a huge difference between enabling and equipping. If the church is properly equipped, then opportunities to go and grow should be planned.

There are multiple reasons a church should assess needs when it comes to missions education. The church must identify places where individuals need to hear the gospel. Even if a town or city has churches, there may be some specific people groups that are not being targeted by present churches. Assessing needs helps leaders and planners to step back and refocus programs. Needs assessment may also open doors for specific ministries that can impact lives in significant ways.

One way to determine needs within the community is to personally ask church members. Many individuals have needs, and by asking the right question, the church can identify a specific group or issue that needs to be addressed. The church may receive some help from area businesses that may want to address a community issue by donating products, money, or time.

For the sake of anonymity, the church may want to survey the congregation. The church can take a hard look at its demographics. The church may want to look at the most recent census data to recognize the changing demographics of the community. Communities change. The church must adapt to change and to the pressing needs of society.

A church may also want to gather information by simply visiting families within the community. Jesus often met other needs before he addressed the spiritual needs of the individuals and the communities with whom he came into contact. Whether a single church or a group of churches come together to complete the project, this assessment could help a whole community come to Jesus Christ.

Another strategy to assess needs is to ask local public and private school teachers. Teachers have more access to children and youth than many church members do. By assessing and identifying needs, the church can work with a local school district to provide relief for some families that are in great need.

A very important missional activity is to provide a printed Bible to every individual who does not possess or have access to a Bible.
