Chapter Eleven

My face melts into the palm of my hand, and I sigh as the midafternoon sun shoots death rays into my tiny shack on MacMillan Pier. There’s a subpar air conditioner to my left, and it whistles a trickle of cool air that easily slips out the sliding window in front of me. What a waste. I take a picture of it and send it to Uncle Jack, followed by a text.

Cor (12:22 PM): It’s hot. Want to bring me ice cream?

Uncle Jack (12:23 PM): Don’t push me.

Uncle Jack (12:23 PM): We’ll get ice cream after dinner.
