He appears again a few minutes later in a ratty old T-shirt, the swimming trunks that she packed for him, and a pair of Converse she threw in the bag.

“Sorry I didn’t pack your jogging clothes,” she says sheepishly, still seated on the porch. “It was hard packing all that stuff for you in secret.”

“No worries.” He jogs lightly on the spot, knowing that he’s got a full set of exercise clothes and a pair of $250 jogging shoes in one of the suitcases he packed for Cabo that’s still hidden in the trunk of the car. “You’ll be all right here by yourself?”

“Don’t worry about me.” She looks up. “I’m going to wash those sheets today. I think I can get that stain out. You take your time. I’ll be fine.” She holds up the rock that she’s been working on. D + C again, this time with a rainbow. “What do you think?”

“A masterpiece.”

When she turns back to the rock, he feels for his smartphone in the loose pocket of the swimsuit to make sure it’s still there. Then he gives a last wave and heads off up the driveway. When he reaches the road, he takes a right and starts running at a good clip.

As the cabin recedes behind him, he recalls the three questions so far.

Would you change for me?

Would you sacrifice for me?

Would you fight for me?

He wonders about the next questions. Wonders what they might be.

Would you…?

To be honest, he can’t wait to find out. As he runs, he thinks that maybe this crazy program is starting to work.
