THE ROLE OF FISH IN ECOSYSTEM BALANCE

Fish also play important roles in all levels of freshwater food webs, from the top predator level down to those fish species that are adapted to graze on algae. Fish thereby make important connections within ecosystems that maintain cycles of energy, nutrients and other matter. They consequently play crucial and often under-appreciated roles in maintaining nature’s productivity, resilience and provision of wide-ranging benefits to humanity.

As such, the diversity and abundance of geographically representative fish species can serve, and are used, as indicators of the overall health of aquatic ecosystems,46 and by extension their resilience and capacity to serve human needs into the future.
