Chapter the Twenty-First

The Isles of Norviç’s Throne

The sound of wood scraping against gravel and sand shook Rylla from her magic, her eyes opening to see Caz taking in the sails and Jovin making ready to drop anchor. Elowen was getting the horses while Moo was busy pouncing on a fish that had flopped on deck.

They must have been traveling at a quick pace for they had reached the Isles much sooner than Rylla had anticipated, and there was a substantial heap of golden dust piled around her now. She sneezed and a waft of gold puffed high into the air only to settle back to the ship’s deck.

The ship swayed choppily in the shore-line serf. Her nausea lingered, and the ship’s movements made it even worse since breaking from her Wind-spell. She felt like she was about to hurl.

Rylla picked up her satchel and ran to the edge of the ship. The drop was too far down to jump. Instead, she grabbed the oaken gangplank and haphazardly slid it down the side of the ship and into the shallow water below. Rylla wasted no time in making the descent, the water meeting her knees as she waded to shore. Once her shoes hit dry ground, she sat down, the nausea pooling in the pit of her stomach. It would pass, surely. She was now on steady ground, but she could feel her body rocking as if it were still on the ship. If there was one thing that rivaled Rylla’s fear and distaste for the dark, it was the idea of vomiting.

“She’s down there…” Elowen’s voice could be heard over the breaking waves along the bank. When Rylla lifted her head, she scrutinized the ship once more. Despite it being a menace to her stomach, it really was quite beautiful. There was something freeing about gliding along a body of water, even if what lurked below was as mysterious as her nausea was inconvenient.

After a few moments, Elowen walked toward her with the two beautiful horses who seemed almost as relieved to be off the ship as she was, if not more so.

“Soo-hoo-hooo-hoo glad to escape that prison, Cinders,” Rembrandt whinnied. His chestnut coat was dotted in seafoam.

“I hope we neeiiiighhhver have to get on it again,” Cinders, a dusty gray horse replied. Rylla couldn’t help but agree with them.

Wait. She could understand horses now? Since when had that happened? Her animal repertoire was growing like the owl had said! The nausea in her stomach was replaced with a jolt of excitement.

Caz followed close behind with the swords and the provisions while Moo clung desperately to his shoulders, avoiding the water as if it were death itself. Jovin came last, carrying two ropes attached to the ship which he took and staked into the sand a little way off.

“We didn’t know where you’d gone to. When Caz asked, you weren’t where I’d last seen you. I figured I might find you here.” Elowen stopped just short of Rylla who was now sitting upright with her arms clasped around her knees.
