SIX FEET FOUR INCHES of muscular magnificence moved toward them, and Daisyâs mouth dropped open. Water clung to his shirt, clung to his trousers, clung toâ
Daisy decided it was best not to examine too closely all the places his wet attire clung to. An odd heat moved between her legs, and her throat dried.
âWhat happened?â she finally asked, conscious her voice was squeaking, as if her vocal cords were so shocked by his appearance that theyâd arranged themselves poorly.
âMost people donât destroy their boats in the middle of meetings with women,â Mrs. Powell said.
The duke shot Mrs. Powell a disgruntled look. âI wasnât planning to destroy the boat.â
Daisy hid her smile at the dukeâs mournful tone. âIâm so sorry.â
âYou should be,â the duke said. âWhat are you doing here? I was surprised to see you.â
âI only wanted to make certain everything went well,â Daisy said.
âWell, it went horribly.â The duke rolled his gaze over her. âYou were spying on me.â
âWatching,â Daisy said, âis a far nicer word.â
âWatching does not properly convey the magnitude of the inappropriateness of your actions.â The dukeâs expression remained dark and dour. âWhereâs your carriage?â
âWe took a hack,â Mrs. Powell chirped.
âAnd it abandoned you here?â
âWe thought your rowing excursion would take more time,â Daisy said.
The duke glowered. âSafety is vital.â
âIâm certain the princess wishes youâd taken that viewpoint.â
The princessâs carriage approached them quickly. The plumes on the princessâs white horses were practically horizontal as they galloped over the dirt road, trampling dust through the air.
âI shouldâerâgive this boat to the boatman,â the duke said. âI suspect heâll want some money for it.â
âI should have thought of a better idea,â Daisy said apologetically.
âYou shouldnât have distracted me,â the duke growled, then sauntered off, carrying the remnants of the boat.
Daisy and Mrs. Powell waited for him to return. After a doubtless painful conversation with the boat manager, they watched as the duke stepped into his carriage.
The carriage soon stopped before them, and the duke and Mrs. Powell assisted Daisy into it.
The dukeâs face remained stormy. Perhaps he was upset the meeting with the princess had not gone better. Perhaps the duke had found her beautiful and fascinating, and all the things men remarked upon in wonder of the women who intrigued them.
âThereâll be other chances to see the princess,â Daisy reassured him.
âI doubt her bodyguard would like that,â the duke grumbled and wrapped his arms against his chest.
Daisy shrugged. âYouâre still not a dreadful marriage prospect.â
âHow courteous of you.â
âBesides, I have some other women in mind too.â
âHmph. But no more meetings in boats.â
âThat can be managed,â Daisy promised. âIâll make certain to introduce to you to someone at the next ball.â
The duke shifted in his seat. Water still splattered from his attire. He had a pained expression on his face.
âIâm sorry,â Daisy said. âYou must be freezing.â
âIâm fine,â the duke said. âNaturally.â
Mrs. Powell smirked. âPerhaps you should take off your shirt. We wouldnât want you to freeze.â
âN-nonsense,â the duke sputtered. âThat would be indecent. Scandalous.â
For a moment, Daisy imagined the duke without his shirt, without his trousers.
