Later, Ken and his mother sat next to each other on the living room couch, watching TV.

“Mom, that was so awesome,” Ken said. “You really showed that guy something.”

But Ellen seemed to be worried. “Ken, just out of curiosity, how would you stop someone from stealing a car?”

“Block the steering wheel, take off a tire, remove the battery, unplug the transmission … why?”

“How about we go out and play with the car a little bit? Maybe take out the transmission.”

“Do you really think he would try?”

“He was your dad’s boss and a sneaky jerk. So he might try.”

Together, they went outside.

“Here’s what we do,” Ken explained. He opened the Eclipse’s hood and disconnected the negative battery cable. Then he disconnected the throttle linkage from the carburetor. Then he put a jack underneath the car and started disconnecting all the wiring and draining the transmission fluid.

“Can you put this back together?” Ellen asked.

“Oh yeah,” Ken said. “Don’t worry, Mom.”

“Ken, you know how I say you’re so much like your brother?”

“Yeah?” Ken shouted as he worked underneath the hood of the car.

“Maybe I was wrong. You’re more like your father. He loved getting underneath cars, taking them apart, pulling them together.”

“It’s just who I am. It’s what I want to do with my life.” Ken moved from under the car. “Done.”

They walked back inside. For the rest of the night, Ken eagerly told his mother more about his dreams, and she listened, just as eagerly.
